IRS Warns of New E-mail and Telephone Scams Using the IRS Name

The IRS is warning taxpayers to ignore E-mail and telephone scams in which the sender/caller identifies themselves as being an IRS employee. The scammers want to trick taxpayers into revealing personal and financial information which they can turn around and quickly:

  • empty the victim's financial accounts
  • run up charges on the victim’s credit card
  • apply for loans
  • file fraudulent tax returns

THE IRS DOES NOT INITIATE CONTACT WITH TAXPAYERS VIA E-MAILS OR PHONE CALLS ASKING FOR PERSONAL INFORMATION.
